When we think of working dogs such as explosives detection dogs, we usually picture a really disciplined dog that takes its job seriously. These dogs start their training during their puppy years and when they graduate, they are assigned to various government agencies. However, not all dogs are cut out for the job.
A dog named Lulu was being trained as a bomb-sniffing dog for the CIA. Lulu was chosen because of her intelligence and also because she has a keen sense of smell. However, when Lulu was 18-months-old, the CIA decided to drop Lulu from the bomb-sniffing program.
The reason was that Lulu just wasn’t interested in doing her job. There are times when dogs do need a little break before they take interest in doing the job that they were actually trained to do. However, there are cases like Lulu where she just wasn’t interested no matter how much playtime she gets or how long she goes on a break.
Lulu made it clear that she didn’t want to be a bomb-sniffing dog. So, the CIA decided to let Lulu go from their K9 program. Thankfully, when a dog is retired or removed from the K9 program, the handler and their family are given the chance to adopt them. Lulu’s handler already bonded with Lulu and the handler’s family was already in love with the pacifist Labrador and they all decided to adopt Lulu.
Now, Lulu enjoys her days playing with the kids and sniffing out squirrels and rabbits in the backyard of her new forever home. Lulu may not have graduated into a bomb-sniffing dog but she’s now living the life that she wanted. The CIA also stated that while they will miss Lulu, they felt that it was the right decision to let Lulu go.
Lulu’s early retirement story was tweeted by the CIA and everyone who saw and read the tweet appreciated what the CIA did. Instead of forcing Lulu into a job that she didn’t want to do, they decided to let her go and let her enjoy her life as a family pet. Here’s a truly adorable video about Lulu and how she got fired in the most adorable way.
