Sometimes, bonds transcend species. That’s certainly the case for a miniature therapy horse and a sheepdog. The two have become “best friends,” much to the delight of everyone around them.
Meet Sirius, an Italian livestock Maremma sheepdog who belongs to the “Guardian Angels.” It is a team of eight-member Maremma dogs guarding the Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses. The dogs live with the horses and have a strong affinity with their small equine buddies.
Then, there’s Mercury, a blue-eyed American miniature horse. He works in hospitals and hospices, helping families who have been through horrific experiences. He’s also a therapy horse for children with autism.
Born three months apart, the two unlikely friends met and grew together. It didn’t take long for Sirius to develop a strong bond with the little horse. They learned their first steps together, rode in a vehicle around the farm, and slept together.
The two friends are inseparable. If one animal leaves the space, the other will go with them. When they’re not together, they’ll wait at the door for each other.
Moreover, Sirius is the only dog allowed to attend the Gentle Carousel reading programs for young, at-risk readers, where he works together with Mercury to help kids learn how to read.
The Gentle Carousel team has even written a children’s book with a message on friendship. The book called “Mercury and Sirius” by Debbie Garcia-Bengochea is about two friends and their special bond. It’s a story of how two different creatures can overcome their differences to become best friends. For the kids, too, meeting them helps bring the story to life.
The friendship between Sirius and Mercury is a beautiful example of how love knows no bounds. These two have defied the odds and shown the world that friendship can truly transcend beyond species.
Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses claim that Sirius and Mercury have a strong bond that they are often seen cuddling and playing together. It can occur between any creatures, no matter how big or small.
The best thing about their friendship is that they can keep it going for the rest of their lives. They’ll always have each other to rely on, no matter what happens.
