Although animals could not talk, they can be trained to communicate whatever they want to tell their humans. But isn’t it nicer to know exactly what your pet is thinking?
A couple from Virginia, Tom and Jane Cannone, have adopted a boxer whom they named Boombox. Ever since they took her in, she had been a very quiet dog.
It took them a few trips to Dog and Cat Hospital before learning that their 8-year-old dog was deaf. It made them realize it was the reason why Boombox didn’t bark that much and why she was never scared of loud noises like thunder.
Boombox isn’t like any other dogs. She develops her own way to understand commands. As Cannone said, they were able to develop a hand motion to let her dog know that it’s time for her walk.
During the routine visit, Veterinarian Layne Brett did something that made the Cannone couple be surprised. She gestured “sit” to Boombox using sign language, and the dog followed.
So Boombox understands sign language – something her family didn’t know about her from the time they adopted her. The couple just took her in without inquiring about her past owners because they felt that Boombox is a sweet and kind dog.

Dogs who understand sign language are either trained to become police dogs or are deaf dogs. But since Boombox was adopted from a rescue organization, nobody knows her background and why she knows sign language.
“There’s something special about her,” Jane Cannone said to an interview with Pilot Online. “She’s so sweet, and I wouldn’t change this experience for the world.”
Jane is very interested to know how much her dog knows about sign language, and she would want to experiment on other commands to see if Boombox would obey.
