In Boksburg, South Africa, a couple is hugging their dogs a little tighter right now after one of them almost drowned in their family’s pool earlier last month. And they have Jessie, their seven-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier, to thank for the daring rescue!
Based on footage caught on their CCTV cameras, their 13-year-old toy Pomeranian named Chucky slipped while he was walking around their pool’s perimeter. Frighteningly, nobody was around to see the unfortunate incident.
When all hope seemed lost, viewers can see Jessie coming out a few minutes later, where she starts to circle the pool. Eventually, we see her follow the little dog who was flailing in the water. The brave rescuer then tries to grab Chucky from the pool’s ledge and extract him from the water. The clip doesn’t show the entire rescue operation, but it took about half an hour for the bigger canine to save his furry pal, where he used his teeth to pull Chucky back to safety.
In an interview with The Times South Africa, Byron and Melissa narrated the incident in their home located east of Johannesburg. The couple recounted that they would have never known what happened if they didn’t discover their soaking wet animals. Byron said they inferred that Chucky probably just dipped his head in his water bowl because nothing else inside their house would have suggested otherwise.
And even though their pets did not know about their ‘do not go into the pool without their supervision’ rule, both of them decided to check their CCTV cameras just the same. This is where they discovered what happened that day.
Byron told the outlet that the clip was heart-wrenching to witness. Even today, they still struggle to watch the footage, and fear rises within them just thinking about what might have happened had Jessie not been around to save their little dog. He added that he was very proud of Jessie, considering she is the younger one between their two pets.
He shared that they have begun swimming training for their dogs. And regardless, they are still planning on installing a pool cover to avoid similar incidents in the future. He mentioned that it never really occurred to them before that they needed the cover. But after Chucky’s accident, they saw how important it was to put up one.
We hope Jessie and Chucky would never have the desire to have unsupervised pool outings in the future, though!
