It was Halloween when a couple in California noticed the moving box by the curb in front of a church. That was definitely something that you don’t see every day. The cardboard box was wrapped in plastic and it seemed to be moving on its own. Is it a prank or is the box alive?
Gloria and Guillermo Reyes are living near the church. They noticed the discarded box already the day before but thought nothing of it. However, when they saw movement the next day, they got curious as to what may be causing it to move.
They went to have a closer look and what they found was a surprise. A dog snout was poking through the box and was trying to break free by chewing on the plastic. They immediately opened the box and found a poor golden retriever puppy inside.
They called their relative for help who in turn alerted the founder of Hand in Paw rescue group, Piper Wood. Wood remembers asking them to take the dog to the vet right away where she will meet them. She was worried that the dog who was just a few weeks old may have had some complications from oxygen deprivation while it was inside the box.
The pup was trapped for 24 hours and that is a traumatic experience. The puppy who was named Dexter was weak and sluggish as a result of the way he was abandoned. The doctor also discovered that he had the parvovirus which is deadly.
Dexter received the treatment he needed and was fortunate that he was found in time. They believed that he was formerly owned by a backyard breeder who abandoned him upon discovery of his disease. Wood shared that such instances are common and it is truly heartbreaking.
Hundreds of applications for his adoption came through and Dexter was given a shot to a life where he is safe and loved.
